Parents,

We had a good first week of training including the Under 12's learning tactical defending the center line and a smattering of Black Pearls--ASA's U10 Team-- playing an intense game in the downpour of Wednesday before the most picturesque evening unfolded.  I am learning the new players and seeing the growth a few months has granted the returning kids, too.

Our game schedule will be upon us before we know it, and our competitors don't take this league lightly. We have a long way to go to be game ready.  I thought I would describe my philosophy before we meet up on a field before a right and ready team.

Vision
My vision is long term, as in, I want the season to be a success most visible after October. That means your player walks away feeling the game in their own body in a totally new way.  Winning is a by-product of small successes. If we match up against a team that is at a higher level, we really can't lose, as long as we continue to play our game, and work on what we are working on.

The Academy looks at the bigger game as a chance to build community, not punish the other team. Encourage your player to think about performance above result.  Be a positive push by asking, "what was fun today?", "What is working out?", and "what are you working on?".

Referees
I recruit, train, schedule, assess, and continue to train all referees for our league games.  This sometimes means I have to deal with Referee issues on game days. This is when the team Assistants will get the teams started.

I am always looking to recruit reliable, athletic, and intelligent referees who are 14 or older.  It is imperative we understand these officials are learning their role, just as our players are learning theirs.  We can only hope for that perfect Referee, because they are out there.  Supportive encouragement for referees can be voiced at the field, but constructive feedback should be channeled through me.  If you really want the Referee to get better, that feedback needs to happen after the game, and in a non-confrontational manner.

What to expect from the Academy: The Value
The two distinct areas of progress I am hoping to see change in are called technical and tactical skill. I can use match play and training time to teach our team's tactical approach, but within a League season it is impossible to teach and train technical skill without the player working with a ball at home

Get off your Duff!!! err I mean, How you can Help your player
Here is how you can help your player to learn good soccer technique.  I write a soccer blog called How to Soccer, and I have a YouTube Channel which can assist you to guide your child through working at home.  If you are opposed to the chance of your child appearing in any videos similar to these, please write me an email ASAP.

A few key blog posts/videos can get you started. You can reach out to me for advice, send me videos with questions, but most importantly, your child should spend minimum 5 minutes every other day dribbling the ball through cones and 10 minutes kicking the ball straight into a target.

I like to keep the spirit light, fun, and infectious!  Please contribute to this by thinking of the Academy as a larger team than just those in uniform.

Finally, Consider playing indoor soccer!  This is where the technical game can be taught, trained, and mastered.  We play a tournament in November to give you a taste of what the season would be like, then January, February, and March we play inside a school gym and at the Elite Sport Center.

 Thanks for Playing ASA!
